about

According to Nick Leet...

I was on a solo acoustic tour with friends Charley Dush & Brad Senne. We had a show booked at the Gallery Cabaret in Chicago and missed the red train which almost caused us to miss our show. We were trying to get to the train station but didn't know which way to go. We tried to ask a few people but they kept staring at the sidewalk. Finally we overpaid a taxi driver. I wrote the lyrics to the song in the van on the way back home from Omaha. I was inspired by those that live with their heads down, scared of what's to come.

This was the 2nd song written for the album. Jon Tranberry (bass guitar) left the band in 2006 shortly after it was written. Jim Soule showed up to try out for the band and impressed everyone by not only knowing how to play every song off of "Moonlight Girls" but also this song before it was ever even recorded. He was instantly in. His backing vocals didn't hurt either!

Musically this song started with the lead instrumental break guitar. It's something Ben "Country" Baker would play between songs at rehearsal. I took his part and wrote a song around it. It's Ben and I's finest collaboration.

lyrics

Late for the red train
22 blocks to the station
walking with your heads down
soaking up the sidewalk

20 seedy blocks
people look scared even when they're not lost
they're trying to find the the quickest way back home

and we're riding it out
till the cop light parade
takes us to the places where they'll always stay
we see their reflections
you know it's inside the lake
takes us to the places where they'll always stay

Why are we here
Another slammed door for every changed gear
we're trying to find the quickest way back home
sit and watch our tvs
shakin' our heads counting casualties
and we're waiting on something that never really seems to end

We always wanted so much more
than this never ending war

I used to know this girl
she wore all black and lived inside her head
Yeah, she's waiting for something that never really seems to change
She never told the truth
made collect calls from a telephone booth
she came and went like she was never really there at all
