about

Mark Devaraj (drums) brought a great instrumental demo to band rehearsal during the very early days of High on Stress. It was a song that he has written and recorded on an 8 track. He had played rhythm guitar, bass and drums. Nick Leet took the demo home and added some additional jangly guitar as well as the lyrics. The song was finished and recorded at OBT Studio, Champlin, MN in early 2004.

According to Nick Leet...
I immediately loved the Tommy Stinson / Bash & Pop vibe of the demo. I was inspired to write the lyrics after a night at the Turf Club in St Paul, MN. I was watching Romantica play when I noticed a girl wearing some intense eyeliner. You'll notice some shout outs to Alice Cooper and Keith Richards. I typically substitute Keith Richards for Slim Dunlap or Tommy Keene when we play it live. The dead heroes line was inspired by the recent passing of Elliott Smith. A majority of the lyrics were inspired by the summer of 1995 and hanging out around Sweethearts Coffee shop in Minot, ND watching bands.

Two of my favorite moments on stage were when Slim Dunlap joined us on stage to play lead guitar. We've since incorporated his part into the song when we play it live. You can hear his contribution (played by Chad Wheeling) on Live at First Avenue.

*The Ashtray Hearts are a great Twin Cities band with an amazing band name.

lyrics

She's got the eyeliner blues
and dead heroes with black tattoos
Only women bleed
What the hell does that mean?
I don't know
Must be something they say

Screw the details of feeling sorry for yourself
you can't beat it
you're the last to know and the last to let things go
The radio is playing the Ashtray Heart
Highway wires all tied in nots

You missed the summer of rock n' roll
And all the people that you used to know
She's got a Keith Richards poster on her bedroom wall
Makes her feel so warm, so invincible

Coffee shops and beat up cars
rainy nights and the sweethearts of the teenage scars
no one writes letters anymore
they just fade away and leave this place behind
