about

according to Nick Leet..

I had written the main verse part on my ex-girlfriend's Martin acoustic guitar while I was waiting for her to get ready to go somewhere. The song wasn't finished until we had broken up months later. It's really about three topics. She broke up with me and then Elliott Smith died the next day. A month later, a co-worker of mine and his girlfriend passed away in a car accident. They were 17 years old. They are the car crash romance that I mentioned. It's still one of my favorite songs that I've written to this day. I may have been on a heavy Wilco binge. The guys sent me back to Studio 24 to de-Wilco it. I did...but just a little.

lyrics

Sometimes you have to let go
to find out what you're looking for
with your car crash romances
and a year in review
what's happening to you
Now I'm falling in love with the idea
idea being in love
and it all goes back to you

What's on the menu for a broken heart?
Gold Star for the meaning of life
and I can't believe the things that are happening to me
Gold Star for the meaning of life

Work and taxes
loads and loads of faxes
rock n' roll dreamer of dreams
loyalty fades and sympathy gleams
traffic lights detect it
you come to expect it
the dark comedy of love and life
year in review
