about

According to Nick Leet...

Ben "Country" Baker had really developed a different style of guitar playing on the "Cop Light Parade" record. He had these nice clean note-y parts that were a bit different from his playing on "Moonlight Girls". During the making of the CLP record he moved to Shanghai, China. I flew out and visited him for 10 days. He took me to a jazz club where he told me to watch the guitar player. He said he studied the guy every trip he took to China. There it was in front of me. It was amazing to be in a different part of the world hearing this unknown man that was influencing our new record. It all made so much sense.

Back in the 90s I received a great mix tape from my friend, Bill Muller of Saint Small. It included "Summer Babe" by Pavement. I remember listening to it on my first band's bus on the way back to North Dakota after recording our debut record with Jon Tranberry in Champlin, MN. Such a great memory basking in the glow of our first recording session. The restaurant mentioned is Schatz Truck Stop in Minot, ND.

lyrics

So afraid
like you do
sitting in your chair
as empty as a room
Summer days
couldn't come too soon
darkness at six o' clock
leave me screaming at the bastard moon

cuz I don't know you
like I did
I want to know you
like I did
Times are changing like 18 to a kid

"Summer Babe" plays out loud
Remind me of a time that's so far from now
Did all you could
Nothing to do
Sitting in a late night restaurant
wishing there was more than you

Scream out loud
broken cupboard door
some days are ok and somedays feel like a war
you had it good, born with this brain
that tells me I'm not good enough
that all of this could go away
